Programs for Scouts
Vets in Training scout programs are a wonderful way for your troop to work toward a specific badge and gain experience handling live animals. The cost is $15 per student. Scout visits are one hour long and include a 40 minute lesson with a lesson, game, or activity focused on the topic of your choice. The last 20 minutes are dedicated to animal play time in which all the students get to interact with various animals by holding, petting, and playing with them.
We charge a $50 travel fee for off site visits with up to a 15 minute drive, cost goes up depending on distance. During an off site visit we will bring 3-4 different animals.
Scout visits in the Vets in Training Education Center will give students access to all 30+ animals at VIT and they can choose which animals they get to play with and see as many as they can get through in their time with us.
Every girl or boy scout will receive a custom Vets in Training Fun Badge for the back of their vest.
Scout Visit Topics and Activities
All Creatures - Meet all the animals at VIT. Learn their specific diet, native habitat and how to create a cage or tank to keep that animal as a pet, and the various behaviors of each animal. Younger kids will play a card game to understand each animal, older kids will read facts about animals and discuss as a group. Everyone gets to meet and interact with lots of different animals!
Basics for All Living Things - Discover how important it is when you own an animal as a pet to not only provide food, water, and shelter, but to ensure that your pet has proper nutrition, adequate lighting, enrichment, and so much more!
Careers in Animal Science - There are so many different careers to choose from when you are an animal lover and want to work closely with animals. Being a veterinarian is not your only option! We will discuss various positions in the animal world and do a resume writing / interview simulation activity.
Wellness Exams - Learn all about what a veterinarian does during a routine wellness exam. Students will be responsible for checking up on an animal, filling out a wellness worksheet, and logging all the health information into our log book.
Habitats - Students will discuss various major types of habitat including forest, desert, arctic tundra, ocean, rainforest, mountain, and savannah. They will discuss the main characteristics of each habitat and decide how animals find food, water, and shelter. Students will either work in groups to make large posters or use our pre-made posters of each habitat. Each student will get a handful of animal cards and be responsible for placing them each into the correct habitat.
And So Much More!!! - Ask about how we could design a program to help you earn a specific badge.
